Understanding Granular and Liquid BioChar

Biochar has become one of the most versatile tools in soil improvement, regenerative agriculture, horticulture, turf management, and environmental restoration. But as interest grows, so does the complexity of the marketplace. Today, growers can choose between liquid biochar and granular biochar, and within each category, they can select raw, charged, or inoculated versions.

Understanding these distinctions is essential for choosing the right product for your soil, your crops, and your long‑term goals. This article breaks down the science, the practical differences, and the real‑world applications of each form — giving you a clear, grounded understanding of how biochar works and how to use it effectively.

Key Points

  • Granular vs liquid BioChar — Liquid biochar is a 5‑micron slurry that coats soil particles quickly and works fast in fertigation/spray systems, while granular biochar (1–5 mm) is long‑lasting, structural, and must be physically incorporated into soil.
  • Physical, chemical, and biological benefits — Both forms improve soil tilth, nutrient retention (CEC), pH buffering, and microbial habitat, but granular excels at structural change and long‑term improvement.
  • Raw vs charged vs inoculated BioChar — Raw biochar must be charged before soil use; charged biochar is pre‑loaded with nutrients; inoculated biochar adds microbes but is more sensitive and expensive.
  • Application differences and use‑cases — Liquid biochar fits high‑efficiency agriculture and perennial systems; granular is best for degraded, compacted, or sandy/clay soils needing structural change.
  • BioChar as a multi‑purpose amendment — Raw biochar also improves composting, reduces odor, filters water, and adsorbs toxins.
  • Choosing the right product — Selection depends on soil test results, desired speed of improvement, available charging materials, and whether you want a one‑stop amendment or DIY charging.
All liquid BioChars are actually a suspension of particles no larger than  5-micron-sized BioChar in water. This is the perfect size for use in any spray application; for farms, turf professionals, and home landscapers.

What Liquid Biochar Actually Does in Soil

Biochar is a carbon‑rich, porous material created through pyrolysis — the heating of biomass in a low‑oxygen environment. Its value comes from three core functional improvements: physical, chemical, and biological.

The porous structure of BioChar improves the physical structure of your soil. This is important whether you are maintaining an 18-hole golf course, a 1,000-acre farm, or a residential yard. Soil tilth is how soil feels, and when it’s crumbly, water infiltrates better, it has more aeration, and compaction is reduced.

These physical changes help roots grow deeper and stronger.

The chemical improvements in soil from liquid BioChar soil amendments increase nutrient retention. Adding liquid BioChar also increases the cation exchange capacity (CEC), pH buffering, and decreases nutrient leaching.

BioChar in liquid form covers soil more evenly than granular and works its way into the soil more quickly. This means fertilizers work more efficiently and stay available longer.
Biology just loves BioChar, in both liquid and granular forms. BioChar provides:
  • Habitat for beneficial microbes
  • Surfaces for microbial colonization
  • Improved nutrient cycling
  • Better root–microbe interactions
Healthy soil biology leads to healthier plants.

Different forms of biochar emphasize different parts of this physical‑chemical‑biological triad.

Liquid Biochar: Fast, Flexible, and System‑Compatible

Liquid biochar is typically micronized (1–10 microns), suspended in water, and often blended with nutrients, minerals, or biological compounds. Its small particle size allows it to move quickly into the soil profile and interact immediately with the root zone. Our BioChar is micronized to 5 microns, the best for use in spray applications.

How Liquid Biochar Works

Liquid biochar behaves like a carbon slurry. It penetrates soil rapidly to coat soil particles. That enhances water movement and provides immediate CEC improvement.

Because it’s flowable, it can be applied through:
  • Sprayers
  • Fertigation systems
  • Irrigation lines
  • Hydroponic systems
  • Tank mixes
Liquid BioChar is perfect for modern high-efficiency agriculture. For the farmer or turf professional who wants visible results in weeks, using an irrigation or fertigation system, this is the form of BioChar that will fit right into your existing protocol.

Granular Biochar: Durable, Structural, and Long‑Lasting

Why not use the granular formulation of BioChar? There are situations when the liquid BioChar isn’t the best option.

How coarse is granular BioChar? Its particle size is 1-5 mm (American BioChar Company’s BioChar is 4mm). It’s very stable and designed for long-term soil structure improvement. It has been the traditional form used in regenerative agriculture and soil rebuilding.

How Granular BioChar Works

Granular BioChar does everything that the liquid form does and also directly changes soil structure. Unlike liquid BioChar, the granular form must be physically incorporated into soil. This can be done with shallow tilling, blending with compost, or mixing it into the soil used for transplanting.

The chemical and biological results from granular BioChar become visible more slowly, but if you have heavy clay or very sandy soil, physical change in the soil is important for the chemical and biological functions to be effective.

Incorporating the granular form of BioChar is best for growers and homeowners who have heavily degraded soil with compaction. You get less compaction with granular BioChar more quickly than with the liquid BioChar formulation.

Liquid BioChar does improve soil structure, but indirectly. The 5 micron size is perfect for coating soil particles (clay, silt, sand, loam) and creating microbial habitat. Once you stimulate microbial activity with liquid biochar, microbes enhance soil structure. Not because the liquid biochar itself creates structure, but because microbes build aggregates, glue soil particles together, and create pore networks.

And both granular and liquid biochar are available as pure biochar, charged, and inoculated forms. Some products have multiple enhancements for a one-stop soil amendment.

Raw vs Charged vs Inoculated Biochar

Your goals and management practices will determine which kind of BioChar product works for you.

Raw (uncharged) BioChar

The physical structure and chemical properties of BioChar depend on the feedstock it came from and the pyrolysis method. To find out how to determine if a specific BioChar is right for your goals, read this in-depth article. What Don’t You Know About Biochar?
This product has to be “charged” before adding to your soil. If you have a farm with manure, a large compost pile, worm castings, or other preferred nutrient mix you add to your soil, this is for you.

Either granular or liquid bioChar formulations work with any type of organic material. Spray or spread the BIoChar over your organics, and you’ll see immediate benefits (not directly related to soil:
  • Odor control (BioChar is the active ingredient in carbon filters)
  • Decreased fly issues around manure and compost
  • Decreased moisture in animal bedding (healthier animals)
  • Accelerated composting
  • Improved water quality when used as a passive filter in your pond; it decreases
    • Algae
    • Turbidity
    • Smell
    • organic load
    • microbial imbalance
  • Toxin adsorption when it’s used in stormwater management, barn runoff control, and greywater systems
  • Carbon sequestration because it is so stable that it is resistant to oxidation

But what if you don’t have a smelly compost or manure pile? Or a slimy pond? Then a charged BioChar product is your best choice.
A mixture of BioChar, nutrients, and microbes creates the optimum growing environment for your garden beds.

What is Charged Biochar?

Charged BioChar has been pre-loaded with nutrients (NPK, minerals, organics, micronutrients) and more. Each brand has its own “proprietary” mix to improve your soil structure, microbial activity, and water retention. Find out what your soil needs (we highly recommend soil testing) so you know what you need for best soil fertility.

Why charged BioChar in the first place? If you put raw BioChar in your soil, it will begin to fill all those miles and miles of pores. It didn’t get them before, so now it will take them from the soil and compete with your plants for nutrients. That means you could actually have a crop failure if you use raw BioChar alone. Charging it fills those pores with nutrients your crops can access, and you’ll see immediate plant improvement.

The nutrient profiles vary widely with charged BioChar products. Charging methods differ, from compost teas to worm castings to humates, and everything in between. Ask questions and read labels.

Charged liquid BioChar products are helpful for turf professionals, arborists, orchardists, and vineyard owners. The liquid BioChar form is easily sprayed in perennial crop systems. Established perennial plantings such as vineyards, berry plantings, and flower beds show immediate results.

Adding the nutrients in charged BioChar to your soil doesn’t just benefit your crops. It also gives the microbial population that’s been an ally to your plants food. And the BioChar supplies housing.

Inoculated BioChar Adds the Biology, Too!

What if you don’t want to wait for the biology to find their new home? Many brands sell inoculated BioChar with microbial populations and nutrients. Your one-stop shop for soil health.

But biology is more sensitive than mineral nutrients. Their survival depends on your storage and soil conditions. If you have active native beneficial microbial populations in your soil, they will outcompete (usually) any “foreign” microbes.

FYI: We love to test for microbial populations in soils. The microBIOMETER is our tool of choice. It doesn’t tell us exactly which fungi and bacteria are in the soil, but in 20 minutes, in the field, we get a good indication of the F/B ratio and amount of carbon in the soil. Then we know if the soil actually needs extra help from outside beneficial microbial populations or not.

The American BioChar Company Team
Products that contain microbes aren’t the best choice for sterile or hydroponic growing situations. Inoculated BioChar is also more expensive than charged or raw BioChar; it probably wouldn’t be the best choice for a large acreage. It simply won’t be economically feasible. The exception to this rule is if you are growing high-profit crops such as cannabis, specialty small fruits, culinary and medicinal herbs, or cut flowers.

When you optimize soil conditions, plants respond by creating stronger flavor profiles and are more fragrant. These are caused by the production of more secondary metabolites that discourage pests and bring us enjoyment. Healthy plants are unattractive to insect pests.

But how much should you apply? Can you get too much good stuff in your soil? The answer is yes! Here is a deep dive into application rates for our BioChar products

How Much BioChar Should Be Applied?

Because biochar products vary widely, application rates depend on:
  • Form (liquid vs granular)
  • Particle size
  • Whether it is raw, charged, or inoculated
