BioChar and Soil Amendment Products From Nature
The Science of Soil Amendments
Nature + Science: The Power of Carbon
What This Means for Your Soil:
Our Products

Activated BioChar charged with freshwater-sourced Humate
VITAL Blend, a blended granular soil amendment, combining BioChar with Humate
These two raw ingredients synergistically work together to improve our soils, the foundation of growing plants. VITAL Blend supports the soil’s ability to effectively feed the plant. Helping gardeners, farmers, and backyarders be able to water and fertilize less, while seeing lusher landscapes, more nutrient-dense foods. and greater yields.
Healthier soils produce healthier plants and promote healthier lives.
Our BioChar blends are offered in both granular (VITAL Blend) and liquid (VITAL Blend 5M) forms. Each can be used interchangeably, so your preferred method of application can determine which product you choose.
Benefits:
- Increases the survivability of newly planted and established trees, landscapes, and grasses
- Promotes more abundant and longer-lasting blooms
- Improves nutrient density, harvest weight, and germination rate/speed
- Increases soil’s ability to retain water (drought resistance), nutrients, and fertilizers (less leaching)
- Can be applied with other nutrients, fertilizers, or amendments
- Improves drainage, reduces compaction, and aids in root development
- Strengthens the plant’s defense against environmental and pest stressors
- Remediates and prevents damage from salts, heavy metals, & toxins
- Acts as a “soil reef” to house microbe populations
- Creates a permanent structure in soils (BioChar lasts for over 600 years)
- Facilitates the plant’s ability to uptake nutrients from the soil
EXAMPLES of initial/start-up application rates:
Nature isn’t exact, your rate doesn’t have to be either
NOTE: The range of rates is dependent upon the current soil conditions; good soils use less, and poor soils need more. For agriculture/gardens, if applied in furrow (right around plants) – use lower rate, or full broadcast (entire field/garden) – use higher rate.
- Row & Specialty crop: 1 – 2 CY per acre
- Lawn & Garden: 1 – 1.5 cf per 1,000 sq. ft.
- Garden & Landscape Plant: 0.5 – 6 cups per plant (depending on size)
- Trees: 1 – 1.5 cups per inch circumference or 3 – 5 cups per inch dbh (diameter) (depending on size)
- Remediation: double the suggested rate
Suggestions:
- Reduce the volume of your nutrients/fertilizer by a minimum of 15-30%
- Reduce your watering schedule or the volume of water used
- VITAL Blend can be applied directly or combined with composts, fertilizers, manures, etc.
- Rates are annual totals and can be applied all at once or split into 2-3 applications
- VITAL Blend is also available in liquid form – see VITAL Blend 5M
- After several years, rates can be reduced
We have some recommendations to consider when making your decision:
- Granular VITAL Blend is roughly coffee-ground-sized. It creates more airspace by adding structure to the soil, especially in sand or clay. It is good for initial soil restoration. Applications can begin with the granular and later be maintained with the liquid. At higher rates, it is an aggressive remediator of contaminants such as salts, herbicides, petroleum, and heavy metals.
- Liquid VITAL Blend 5M is used more often in fertigation, driplines, backpack sprayers, or in tank mixes with other inputs for lawns, landscape, gardens & agriculture. It’s great for compost teas and hydroponics, too. VITAL Blend 5M’s small size (5 micron), allows it to easily pass through all professional and agricultural screens – it won’t clog your filters. Size matters; the microscopic size of VITAL Blend 5M makes it easier to infiltrate the soil and more convenient for the microbes to inhabit

BioChar is our middle name, but our first priority. We chose recycled southern yellow pine as our feedstock because porosity is so important. Just one cubic foot of our BioChar has over 690 acres of available surface area (pores), providing living accommodations for soil microbes and space for holding more water, oxygen, and nutrients. Our BioChar will last for over 600 years. This “nearly permanent” structure aids in water percolation, promotes root growth, and reduces erosion.
Our granular Humate is freshwater-sourced humalite. It has lots of humic, fulvic, and other organic acids and over 60 macro- & micro-nutrients. Humate’s story began millions of years ago, so it is immediately bioavailable to soil microbes and plants. We chose Humate to blend because it’s a great adjuvant (enhances nutrient effectiveness), surfactant (aids in water percolation), and chelator (improves nutrient availability).
Ingredients: BioChar (softwood feedstock), Humate (Humalite)

NAKED Char, Granular Pure Activated BioChar
NAKED Char is made from sustainable forestry wood waste through “no oxygen” high-heat pyrolysis at an average temperature of 650 degrees Celsius (1202 degrees F). We finish the production with a unique final step that activates and exposes the internal surface area of the fixed carbon. By using only single-sourced Southern Yellow Pine soft wood, we ensure the quality and consistency of our BioChar. We are committed to producing BioChar with low ash content, high porosity, and nearly neutral pH. Our granular NAKED Char has a minimum moisture content of 25%. If a biochar is too dry, it can become hydrophobic (repel water).

Approved as a Livestock Feed Additive – It has been specially labeled for Livestock Feed Additive
The abundance of pores in NAKED Char, when used by itself, makes it an extremely effective soil remediation tool and a great addition for water filtration systems. With great porosity comes great responsibility. Due to its impressive ability to adsorb and hold nutrients (reduce leaching), soil applications should be blended (pre-charged) to avoid nutrient tie-up. See our pre-charged soil amendments – VITAL Blend (granular) or VITAL Blend 5M (liquid)

Suggestions:
- Reduce the volume of nutrients/fertilizer input by a minimum of 10-20%
- Humate can be applied directly or combined with composts, fertilizers, manures, etc.

NAKED Char 5M Soil Amendment – Liquid
Recycled southern yellow pine is our feedstock because porosity is so important. Just one cubic foot of our BioChar that we use to create NAKED Char 5M has over 690 acres of available surface area (pores), providing living accommodations for soil microbes and space for holding more water, oxygen, and nutrients. It creates a “nearly permanent” structure (over 600 years) that actively encourages healthy soil microbe populations. The liquid NAKED Char 5M will evenly disperse throughout the soil and quickly reach a higher percentage of the soil microbes.
Healthier soils produce healthier plants and promote healthier lives.
- Sequesters carbon (reduces your carbon footprint)
- Extremely concentrated – low application rates make it cost-effective for small projects or large operations
- Adding NAKED Char 5M to compost teas increases the survivability of the microbes during and after application
- Great with tank mixes – helps keep more of the nutrients or fertilizers within the critical root zone
- Remediates contaminants and excess salts
- Simply add to water – as a soil drench, in furrow, center pivot, deep root injection, etc.
The 5-micron size won’t clog sprayers, irrigation systems, drip lines, etc. - Improves nutrient retention (less leaching) & reduces the need for fertilizers
- Increases water holding capacity in soils
- Aids in water percolation through the soil
- Increases cation exchange capacity (CEC)
- Reduces soil compaction & increases soil organic matter (SOM)

Increases root growth – Increases soil biology – Reduces Erosion - Adds a permanent structure to house soil microbes & nutrients (600+ years)
- Can be used as a liming agent
When making NAKED Char 5M, we start with our granular BioChar that has a minimum of 25% moisture, and then it is wet-milled down to 5-micron size (.0075 mm) and added to water. By maintaining a minimum moisture content throughout the process, we prevent the BioChar from becoming hydrophobic. Size matters; the microscopic size of NAKED Char 5M is easier to infiltrate the soil and more convenient for the microbes to inhabit.
The abundance of pores in NAKED Char 5M, when used by itself, makes it an extremely effective remediator of contaminants such as salts, heavy metals, and toxins. With great porosity comes great responsibility. Due to its impressive ability to adsorb and hold nutrients, NAKED Char 5M should be blended (charged) to avoid temporary nutrient tie-up.
See our pre-charged soil amendments – VITAL Blend (granular) or VITAL Blend 5M (liquid)
Our BioChar is offered in both granular NAKED Char and liquid NAKED Char 5M. Each can be used interchangeably, so your preferred method of application can determine which product you choose. We have some recommendations to consider when making your decision:

Mycorrhizal Inoculant Plus + is an Endo and Ecto Mycorrhizal Fungi and Beneficial Bacteria
Bring life back to your soils with Mycorrhizal Inoculant Plus. Microbial inoculants should closely mimic nature; ours includes both Fungi and Bacteria, at a ratio found in healthy soils. Mycorrhizal Inoculant Plus increases the biological diversity in soils and is effective in all soil conditions. Both types of microbes; fungi and bacteria, increase water percolation, reduce soil compaction, and aid in soil particle aggregation, resulting in healthy plant growth.
The beneficial Bacteria make nutrients more available to plants, produce growth hormones, boost disease immunity, and improve soil structure. Symbiosis – The plant supports bacterial populations by feeding them exudates (sugars).
The Fungi include both endo-mycorrhizae and ecto-mycorrhizae. The mycorrhizae form a mutualistic relationship – a type of symbiosis – with plant roots. This association benefits both the fungi and the plants. The fungi help plants by increasing the absorptive surface area of the roots, improving a plant’s stress tolerance, and reducing soil compaction.

Shortstop is a Plant Growth Regulator
After an application of ShortStop, trees and woody shrubs appear healthier, and the plants show increased vigor, improved nutrient absorption, appear greener, and have better pest resistance. ShortStop applications boost the growth of fine root hairs in trees and woody shrubs and facilitate trees and woody shrubs during drought stress, construction damage, poor soil conditions, and limited root space. It has been shown to reverse the decline in mature Oak trees and rejuvenate yellowing (chlorotic) Birch and Pin Oaks.
- Increase root production of trees & woody shrubs
- Increase fruit/nut production
- Increase chlorophyll production
- Greater energy optimization
- Deep green foliage
- Reduce the need for pruning
- Improving drought tolerance
- Healthier plants showing increased vigor
- Improve nutrient absorption
- Better resistance to stress & pest
- Crowded landscape areas
- New construction zones
- Near patios, fences, & pools
- Limited space plantings
- Hard to maintain areas
- Near sidewalks or electric lines
- Shaped or Pruned plantings
- Rooftop gardens
1 Liter conc. to 11 Liters water
100 mLs conc. to 1100 mLs water
Half gallon conc. to 5.5 gallons water
32 ounces conc. to 352 ounces water
Suggestions:
Mix concentrate well before diluting
Mix RTU (ready to use, aka diluted concentrate) well before each use
Purchase a slide chart ($12) for application rate accuracy
Benefits of Shortstop applications include redistributed energy, rather than expending energy on top growth; trees increase root production, reducing the need for pruning and improving drought tolerance. Altered Leaf physiology changes can be expected, like thicker leaf cuticles, smaller stomata size, and increased leaf hairs help reduce water vapor loss in hot, dry weather and aid in surviving pest attacks.
After an application, there will be enhanced Root Hair Growth; strong roots mean strong trees. An enhanced root system optimizes the translocation of water and nutrients found in the soil, reducing stress and the impact of construction damage.
Reduced production of Gibberellic Acid. Gibberellic Acid is responsible for vegetative growth in plants. Reducing its production results in shorter length between internodes of branches and 80-95% less annual branch growth, meaning less frequent pruning and maintenance. Increased production of abscisic acid.
Abscisic acid is an inhibitory plant hormone that reduces transpiration to prevent water loss and reduces enzyme production required for photosynthesis, aiding in drought stress management and top-growth production.
Increased Production of Chlorophyll. Chlorophyll allows plants to absorb energy from sunlight and produces green leaves. Increased chlorophyll production results in greater energy optimization and attractive deep green foliage.

30% Vinegar organic foliar herbicide
Our 30% Vinegar is an organic herbicide that kills herbaceous and woody plant material on contact. It is a non-selective herbicide that is 30% high-concentration Acetic acid. It’s considered more environmentally friendly, replacing other herbicides, including glyphosate (Round Up).
Vinegar is a contact herbicide that ruptures the plant tissue, causing the plant to dry out. It may require multiple applications, but breaks down quickly in the soil (little to no effect on the soil microbes or neighboring plant roots). Top growth can be expected to die off within 2 – 4 hours. Applied properly, it will have little to no effect on soil pH. Using a high volume will only temporarily change the pH of the topsoil (for less than 5 days).
Suggestions:
- Research shows that using less than a 20% concentration is not effective
- Wear appropriate PPE when mixing or applying
- Be thorough with your application, foliar spray the entire plant for a complete kill
- Be Cautious; the Vinegar is a non-selective herbicide, it doesn’t discriminate between weeds & your lawn
- Weather considerations: wind and rain can cause unintended overspray and off-site kill
Blending Rates:
- For woody or larger plants: Use as is (right out of the bottle)
- For herbaceous and smaller plants: Dilute a 2:1 ratio (2 parts Vinegar to 1 part water)
