American BioChar Company believes
"The Beauty Above comes from the Science Below"
This means that the natural beauty and fertility of the plants we see above ground are the result of a healthy, active soil fertility below ground.
What Is Your Soil Health Goal?
To maintain a healthy houseplant, or improve your crop yield, or increase the blooms on your flowering shrub, or have a more bountiful garden production, or a lush lawn – VITAL Blend will help you achieve your goal.
To improve soil fertility, we created a soil amendment called VITAL Blend, which provides both Active and Fixed Carbon to the soil. It Improves soil structure, promotes soil biology, and enhances plant growth.
The lush, vibrant plants, the canopy of shade erupting out of that tree trunk, and the productivity of sustainable agriculture that we admire are not mere happenstance; they are the result of a thriving ecosystem that begins beneath our feet.
That healthy soil is a dynamic, living entity that provides plant nutrition, water, and the soil structure that supports the plants we see above ground. It is teeming with microorganism communities with multiple specializations. Other microbiology aid in the decomposition of organic matter into plant-available nutrients, and some, such as fungi, send out long strands, hyphae, to access the specific nutrient or amount of water the plant has signaled it needs.

The microbiology and plant biomass are synergistically aligned to move nutrients and water to each plant cell. When the soil is rich in biodiversity and organic content, it empowers plants to grow lush and strong, directly influencing the overall health of ecosystems.
The relationship between soil and plant health extends beyond aesthetics. Fertile soil enhances the resilience of plants in an era where the effects of climate change are far too evident. Healthy plants can withstand pest infestations, pathogens, disease, and environmental stressors such as drought or flood.
This underground network not only supports the plants that capture sunlight and produce oxygen but also plays a crucial role in carbon sequestration, helping to mitigate climate change. When we overlook the importance of soil health in favor of focusing solely on the visible beauty of plants, we miss out on understanding the intricate symbiosis that sustains life on our planet. By nurturing the ground beneath our feet, we invest in the future of our gardens, ecosystems, and ultimately, the health of our environment.
We’ve Learned So Much…with Biochar Center Stage
Early in our journey, we spent time on the Haitian island of La Gonave, working with the islanders to improve their clay soil. We learned much about indigenous wisdom and took their advice on Mango tree spacing, irrigation watering plans, and much more.
We are motivated by the fact that most soils are low in organic matter and micronutrients. In fact, “the world’s cultivated soils have lost between 50-70% of their original carbon stock (Rattan Lal, Ohio University).” We recognize that soil and plant interactions need more than inorganic inputs for sustainable growth conditions.

Our journey into biochar began as an offshoot of our company Plant Growth Management where we had focused on working with arborist professionals on maintaining tree health. The soil conditions where trees tried to root almost always included soil compaction, micronutrient deficiencies, poor drainage, and little beneficial soil microbiology diversity.
Now, we can’t imagine consulting on tree care or shrubs without including biochar with humate as a soil amendment. The combination of fixed carbon (the biochar) and active carbon (the humates) creates immediate leaf, root, and flowering plant health while fixing carbon in the soil for long-term soil fertility.
VITAL Blend, in liquid or granular form, is perfect for turf, lawn, tree care, and agricultural soil fertility
American BioChar Company Has Grown – Because of Our Valued Customers and Staff
Our vision could not have been achieved without the faith customers had in our research, the soil test protocol, and extensive testing on diverse charging materials.
Biochar, alone, is not a fertilizer. It is a natural environment for diverse microorganism communities. Those tiny soil critters are necessary for nitrogen fixation, decomposition of organic matter, nutrient management, and development of a deep layer of organic matter (humus).
With Mark’s background as a soil scientist and Laurie’s as a chemist, and the help of a devoted staff, we’ve been able to define the most effective charging materials for consistent agronomic results. We tested animal manure, compost, coconut coir, peat, algae, and many other forms of waste products.
We discovered Humate with humic acid, fulvic acid, and multiple micronutrients to give the most consistent results. Through experiments we found the results were even more consistent when we sourced the Humate from freshwater-sourced plant-derived Humate.
We didn’t have to create this Humate ourselves. We found that the OMRI-listed sustainably sourced Humate product from Black Earth (ACTIV80 AG) blended perfectly with our biochar. We source our biochar from sustainably harvested Southern Yellow Pine exclusively because it has the best porosity for a soil amendment.
We pride ourselves on creating biochar blend products that consistently have a pH level below 7.0, high porosity, and the right blend of active and fixed carbon.
Join us on our journey as we develop more biochar products for agriculture, arboriculture, and horticulture. Our VITAL Blend is the result of a long search for quality fixed and active carbon in an amendment protocol for turf, trees, landscape, and agriculture.
Our solution to improving soils is VITAL Blend soil amendment and Soil Conditioner
The Science of CARBON is found in our combination of ACTIVE Carbon from the plant-derived humate and FIXED Carbon from the activated biochar. The result of healthy soil microbiome species communities is the beauty of healthy plant development.
