Soil health is the foundation for strong and healthy seedlings. Potting soil that includes a biochar blend gets plants off to a good start for resilience to extreme weather as they grow to mature plants.

Soil Health is the Foundation of a Beautiful Landscape

It all begins with soil health. Plants, trees, and turf are all healthier, more resistant to insect and disease pressure, and more beautiful for us to gaze at when we pay attention to the soil.

The Relationship between Soil Health and Plant Health

The cornerstone of a thriving garden, lush landscape, or bountiful agricultural field lies in the soil beneath our feet. It may often be overlooked, but the soil is a living ecosystem that fuels the growth of plants, trees, and turf. Healthy soil is packed with essential nutrients, beneficial microorganisms, and organic matter that work in harmony to support plant life.

When we invest time and care into cultivating our soil, we are, in essence, nurturing the foundation of our green spaces. This attention to soil health results in stronger, more resilient plants that are better equipped to withstand insect infestations and disease pressures, ultimately leading to a more vibrant and visually appealing environment.

The relationship between soil and plant health goes beyond basic nutrient supply. Healthy soil improves water retention and drainage, allowing plants to access moisture more effectively. This balance minimizes the stress that plants experience during droughts or heavy rains.

The intricate web of soil organisms, such as earthworms, nematodes, fungi, and bacteria, plays a pivotal role in breaking down organic matter and recycling nutrients. An efficient nutrient cycling system ensures that plants have what they need to flourish. By prioritizing soil health, we create flourishing ecosystems that not only enhance the beauty of our landscapes but also contribute to a more sustainable environment, offering myriad benefits for both nature and humanity.

Soil with biochar and humates is a healthy environment for strong plant root growth, beneficial microorganisms, and lush aboveground plant growth.

Sand Soil – Clay Soil – Biochar Improves All Soil Structures

Biochar isn’t new. It has been reported in many studies to benefit soil health.

What is biochar? It is any organic matter that has been heated to a high temperature in the absence of oxygen to create a charcoal-like substance. This process is called pyrolysis, and it results in several end products. One is syngas, which can be used to fuel the process, heat your home, or supply electricity. Another end product is the solid black lightweight product we know of as biochar. It is pure carbon, and one of its many valuable properties is carbon sequestration.

When you work biochar into your soil, you improve soil fertility by increasing water retention, soil biology, and soil carbon. But biochar alone is not a fertilizer. It improves the structure of soil, making it easier for plant roots to penetrate and find the nutrients needed at any time.

The pyrolysis process results in a pure carbon product. It has to be “charged” with nutrient-loaded organic matter such as humates or compost, which results in a slow-release fertilizer that is also the perfect environment for beneficial soil biology. Those microbes speed up the nutrient cycle, enriching your lawn, trees, flowers, vegetables, and field crops.

The increase in water-holding capacity of biochar-enriched soil means beneficial soil biology allies can supply water and nutrients to plants in a symbiotic relationship. The plant supplies root exudates to the biology. In return, microbes supply plant-available forms of nutrients to their host plants. The biochar has a porous structure that is a “microbe reef” in the soil.

Yellow Pine feedstock results in highly porous biochar after pyrolysis. This is then charged with Humates and is a very beneficial soil amendment.

Active Carbon and Stable Carbon – For the Long Haul

Microbes need active carbon as fuel. Active carbon is supplied by the decomposition of organic matter. Materials such as crop residues, food waste, compost, humates, and manure all contain active carbon and many micronutrients necessary for soil biology and plant health. The process of decomposition, aided by soil biology, results in carbon dioxide as a by-product. If your soil is bare this isn’t used by plants and enters the atmosphere. Keeping your soil covered with growing plants retains the carbon dioxide and feeds a growing diversity of soil biology.

When scientists talk about carbon sequestration, they’re talking about stable carbon. Biochar, all by itself, is ONLY stable carbon. It will remain in undisturbed soil for millennia. In many parts of the world, a biochar and organic matter soil known as “terra preta” has been found. It is the product of buried cooking fires of indigenous peoples from centuries ago, and pockets of this high-fertility soil are still being farmed.

As soon as you expose soil carbon to oxygen, that is, if you rototill, disc, or plow, it binds with oxygen molecules and becomes carbon dioxide (CO2). A greenhouse gas that is natural but toxic when in excess.

We are living in a time of climate change created by an excess of greenhouse gas emissions. In the long haul, the greenhouse effect can be slowed and even reversed by using biochar as a soil conditioner. Not only are you improving your sand or clay soil when you incorporate biochar, but you’re also a force for climate change mitigation.

You can have a beautiful landscape and decrease your carbon footprint.

Biochar can be messy but not this bad. When spreading it in your garden try to use tools so you don't end up this dirty.

Biochar: A Natural Soil Amendment for Soil Health

Creating the perfect environment for plant growth hinges on optimizing soil health, and VITAL Blend Soil Amendment plays a crucial role in this process. By enhancing soil fertility, our product ensures that essential nutrients are available to plants, promoting robust growth and resilience. The organic materials and active carbon in our biochar blends are sourced from freshwater ancient life forms that have decomposed into humate. Through experiments, we have found Active12 plant-derived humate to offer the highest number of micronutrients, enzymes, minerals, fulvic acids, humic acids, and many other natural biostimulants. We’ve also found it to give you the most consistent benefits for your lawn, garden, or field.

In VITAL Blend, granular and liquid, we harness the power of humates, a rich source of organic matter that significantly enhances soil health and structure. These humates are derived from naturally occurring organic deposits, which, when integrated into the soil, work to improve its physical properties. This includes increasing soil aggregation, where soil particles clump together, thereby creating more porous spaces that allow for better air circulation and water movement. As a result, the soil becomes adept at retaining moisture while simultaneously providing the necessary drainage to prevent waterlogging. This dual capacity is vital for creating a balanced environment where plants can absorb their required nutrients effectively.

How would VITAL Blend impact your landscape?

The transformation of the soil through the use of these humates contributes to a thriving ecosystem that supports plant growth. Improving the soil structure fosters root development and promotes healthy plant relationships with beneficial microorganisms. This harmonious interaction is critical for nutrient cycling. This ultimately leads to richer harvests and vibrant landscapes. Crops thrive in this enhanced environment; farmers and gardeners can enjoy the long-term benefits of sustainable practices. Our biochar blends demonstrate that enhancing soil health is not just about immediate yields but also about fostering resilient soil health for the future.

VITAL Blend granular can be combined with garden soil or other growing mediums to improve nutrient availability and soil structure for optimum plant health.
